This is what’s called a wide-angle fixed focal 
length, or prime lens. Wide-angle lenses are 
ideal for capturing expansive vistas, such as 
landscapes or cityscapes, or being creative 
with environmental portraits as you can 
include lots of the person’s surroundings. In 
addition, its very wide aperture of f/2.8 is great 
for producing soft, blurred backgrounds.

There will be times when your kit lens doesn’t 
have the ‘reach’ to capture your subject 
suff iciently, as they end up disappointingly 
small in the picture. So to fill the frame with 
distant objects, a telezoom lens is needed. 
Though optically powerful, this is a compact, 
lightweight lens that removes the type of 
restriction some shooting situations present, 
for example, filling the frame with your child’s 
face at the school play or capturing that all-
important sporting event from the sidelines. 
It also has OIS built in to keep things sharp 
when hand-holding in low light.
