General Maintenance
Timber products will require care and maintenance as they weather over time. We recommend to:
•
Check over the cubby house every season
•
Sand away any sharp points or splinters
•
Re-tighten screws and bolts and tap in any nails/staples that may have lifted
•
Give the cubby house a wash with some mild soap and warm water to remove any dirt/grime build up
•
Coat or re-coat the timber with appropriate layers of surface protection such as a stain or paint finish to
protect from natural elements and extend the life of the cubby house
Wood Advice
Timber is a natural product and may experience changes throughout the course of its life. It may develop minor
cracks and gaps; this is known as thermal timber expansion and contraction.
Timber cracks and gaps sometimes occur due to the moisture content within the timber and the external
surroundings. You will notice in drier times of the year the timber will show some minor gaps and cracks as the
moisture in the timber is dried out. These gaps and cracks are totally normal and will eventually close back up
once moisture in the area around the cubby house is returned. Each piece of timber can react differently to the
climate. A crack in the timber does not affect the strength or durability of the wood or structural integrity of the
cubby house.
Weatherproofing
For ultimate protection from leaks and rain we recommend using Selleys Storm Sealant.
Selleys Storm Sealant delivers a waterproof seal on any material, perfect for any fine timber cracks that you
want to seal. Storm Sealant can be painted over too.
Mould
Mould is an environmental condition that can occur in humid conditions or after periods of rainfall and there are
various ways to treat and prevent it from occurring.
•
Distilled white vinegar: Vinegar is a very effective way to remove mould on most wood surfaces. It will
penetrate the wood and kill the mould at the roots.
•
Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil is a natural fungicide that is effective at killing mould spores throughout the home.
Mix 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil to 1 cup of water and spray it on the mould and leave it on overnight and then
clean it off with a surface cleaner.
•
Dishwashing detergent: Liquid dishwashing detergent mixed with warm water is highly effective at killing
mould on painted or stained wood.
•
Hydrogen peroxide: Hydrogen peroxide has antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties, making it
extremely effective at killing mould on porous surfaces such as wood.
•
Commercial Mould Treatment preparations: Available from supermarkets etc.
IMPORTANT! Avoid using bleach to remove mould from wood.
