Wenn den besten Camaro aller Zeiten ein Wort beschreiben
kann, dann hat es der US-Komiker und Auto-Junkie Jay Leno
nach einer ersten Probefahrt geprägt: „deutsch“. Gefühltes
German Engineering nämlich. Damit beschreibt er treffend
den technischen Aufwand, mit dem die Chevrolet Techniker
das immense Kraftpotential des stärksten Camaro alle Zeiten in
den Griff bekommen haben. Schon der legendäre Camaro ZL1
von 1969 sorgte für atemberaubende Momente, lieferte der
V8 damals schon unglaubliche 500 PS und begeisterte die Fans
an den Drag Strips. Doch damals musste man ja hauptsächlich
geradeaus fahren. Heute befeuert den Camaro ZL1 ein 6,2 Liter
großer V8-Motor, der aus der Corvette ZR-1 stammt und 580
PS leistet. Im Camaro versuchen nun diese 580 PS mit unglaub-
lichen 750 Newtonmetern Drehmoment den Gummi von den
Reifen zu schrubben. In 4 Sekunden passiert der Camaro die 100
km/h Marke, bei 290 km/h ist dann Schluss. Damit diese Kraft
zu händeln ist, hat man ein handgeschaltetes Sechsganggetrie-
be mit dem Zwei-Scheiben-Kupplungssystem aus der Corvette
verbaut und das „Magnetic Ride“-Fahrwerk verwendet, dessen
Stoßdämpfer mit einer magnetischen Flüssigkeit gefüllt sind,
die bis zu 1.000 Mal pro Sekunde die Dämpferhärte verstellen
und sich permanent der Fahrbahn anpassen. Als Bremsanlage
wird eine Brembo Anlage genutzt, deren Bremsscheiben (370
Millimeter vorne und 365 Millimeter hinten) größer sind als
handelsübliche Pizzakartons fassen würden.
All dieser technische Aufwand hat seinen Preis. In den USA wer-
den für den ZL1 ordentliche 42.000,00
€
aufgerufen. Dass es
keinen offi ziellen Import nach Deutschland gibt, werden Fans
hier zulande mit einem Preis von 80.000,00
€
rechnen müssen.
Zuerst wird das Coupe, später das Cabrio nach Deutschland
kommen und mit seiner technischen Ausstattung etablier-
ten Sportwagenschmieden die Stirn bieten. Lenos Testwagen
schaffte die Nürburgringrunde immerhin in 7:41,27 Minuten.
If one word could describe the best Camaro ever, then it has to
be that used by the US comedian and car junkie Jay Leno after
his fi rst test drive - namely „German“. The feel of German en-
gineering. With this word he aptly describes the technical com-
plexity with which the Chevrolet technicians got to grips with
the immense power potential of the most powerful Camaro
of all time. Even the legendary Camaro ZL1 from 1969 caused
some breath-taking moments. The V8 at that time already
yielded an incredible 500 bhp and thrilled fans at many drag
strips. But then one mainly had to go only in a straight line. To-
day, the Camaro ZL1 is powered by a 6.2-litre V8 engine which
comes from the Corvette ZR-1 and delivers 580 bhp. In the new
Camaro this incredible 580 bhp pushes out 750 Nm of torque
and tries to scrub the rubber off the tires. The Camaro passes
the 100 km/h (62 mph) mark in just 4 seconds and ends up at
290 km/h (180mph). In order to handle these forces, Chevrolet
has installed a manual six-speed transmission with the two-disc
clutch system from the Corvette and used the „Magnetic Ride“
suspension where the shock absorbers are fi lled with a magnet-
ic fl uid that adjust the stiffness of the suspension up to 1,000
times per second and constantly adapts to the road surface.
Braking is undertaken by a Brembo braking system with brake
discs measuring 370 mm front and 365 mm rear, larger than
would fi t into a standard commercial pizza box.
All this technical outlay comes at a price. The regular price for
the ZL1 in the US is
€
42,000.00. Because there is no offi cial
import into Germany fans there must come up with a hefty
€
80,000. First of all the Coupé and later the Convertible will
come to Germany and with their technical features confront
the established sports car manufacturers. Leno’s test car eased
around the Nürburgring in a very respectable 7 minutes and
41.27 seconds.
