The ST101 only uses the
STANDARD
Mode of operation, which is activated by
default when the locator is powered on.
The modes of operation

for the ST102
are
STANDARD
Mode,
ERASE
Mode,
SMART +
Mode, and
SMART -
Mode.
The
STANDARD
Mode is activated by
default when the locator is powered on.

Standard Mode
In Standard Mode of operation, the locator
will respond to any magnetic field that
offsets the balance of the sensors. The
Standard Mode is active once the locator
is powered on.
ERASE Mode (ST102 Model Only)
In search areas where there are large
ferrous metal objects such as metal build-
ings, vehicles, chain-link fences, etc, that
can interfere with finding a smaller ferrous
metal object of interest, the ERASE Mode
can be useful.
When trying to locate a ferrous object
next to a large metal object, the sensitivity
must be reduced to keep the output from
the large metal object from saturating the
audio and visual output.
However, reducing the sensitivity also makes it
more difficult to detect the object of interest.
Pressing the ERASE
MODE
erase
11
button digitally
offsets the large metal object allowing the
audio tone and visual display to return to a
"no detect" indication without reducing the
sensitivity.
This is useful as long as the search is con-
tained within a "reasonable radius" around
the locator after the
MODE
erase
ERASE button is
pressed. A "reasonable radius" is depen-
dent on the magnetic field strength and
proximity of the large metal object. Once
outside of the "reasonable radius" area the
MODE
erase
ERASE button may need to be pressed
again if the audio and visual output become
saturated.
If you are over the object of interest and
you press the
MODE
erase
ERASE button, the
object of interest can be "erased". If you
think this is a possibility, it would be useful
to press the
MODE
erase
ERASE button again with
the locator in a slightly different position
and search the area again.
Note:
When pressing the
MODE
erase
ERASE
button, the locator needs to be held steady
for approximately 2 seconds. If the locator
is moved during this time or the magnetic
