Sample Activities:
• Construction is over. Now, it’s time to practice driving the MiniMAX Bot. Have some fun
familiarizing yourself with how the MiniMAX Bot performs.
• The MiniMAX Bot is a mobile robot just like the RangerMAX Bot, with a similar motor
configuration for the drive system. The omni wheels, however, are mounted perpendicular to the
drive wheels, which isn’t the way traditional non-driven support wheels are mounted. How does
this affect drive performance? If you set up the same driving course you used for the RangerMAX
Bot, how does the performance compare? Does the MiniMAX Bot turn better or is it easier to
drive? Does the vertical height of the MiniMAX Bot make it harder to maneuver?
• MiniMAX Bot is a departure from traditional mobile driving platforms. Does the design and visual
appearance affect the performance? Does the design and visual appearance affect appeal? Does
the upright basic humanoid shape fit your perception of what a robot should look like? Would
you rather build a humanoid-type robot or the traditional mobile driving platform?
• It’s time for an open-ended building challenge. With the permission of your teacher, modify
MiniMAX Bot so he is even more humanlike or perhaps change him to MiniMaxine Bot. How
could you make your robot more appealing so that people would want to build or buy it?
• Change the drive mode of your MiniMAX robot from single-stick drive to tank drive where each
joystick controls the movement of a wheel. Refer to the Tank-Drive Mode wiring diagram on
page 14 to set up the robot for this style of steering. Press the Mode button on the R/C motor
controller to toggle the controller to tank drive. In tank drive, the LED near the button on the R/C
motor controller should be off. You’ll also need to change which channels are used to move the
servos. After you’ve practiced driving in tank-drive mode, compare single-stick- and tank-drive
modes. Which method of steering the robot do you prefer?
