Cane Height Adjustment
Care and Maintenance
The following should be checked periodically:
Ensure the locking knob is securely tightened.
Check the cane tips for wear and tear.
Check the handle to ensure it is attached securely.
Measuring a Cane
To find the appropriate handle height:
Put on your usual walking shoes.
Stand upright with your arms at your side with a normal relaxed bend in your elbow.
The cane needs to be adjusted so the top of the handle equals the position of the wrist joint.
This is a general measurement guide. Certain users may have specific conditions that will require
them to have the cane at a different height. Each individual should always consult with their doctor
or therapist to determine proper adjustment and usage.
Using a Cane
Generally, walking sticks are held in the hand opposite to the injured or affected leg, however in
some circumstances it may be appropriate to use the cane on the affected side.
When walking, the cane should be placed forward at the same time as the affected leg is moved
forward, the unaffected leg then following.
Keep the cane away from your feet to avoid tripping.
Going up stairs: Place the unaffected leg forward first, followed by the cane and affected leg.
Going down stairs: The affected leg and cane should be lowered first followed by the unaffected leg
on the same step.

Depending on the type of cane you have, there will be either a locking collar or
locking knob to secure the cane height.
To adjust the cane height:
Turn the locking collar (or knob) counter clockwise to loosen.
Depress the brass snap button and slide the extension leg up or down to adjust
to your required height.
Ensure that the snap button is fully protruding through the height adjustment
hole for your desired height. An audible ‘click’ will be heard when the snap
button has securely locked in the hole.
Turn the locking collar (or knob) in a clockwise motion to secure the cane.
