D
After your dog can ring the bell on
command,
transition to rewarding him
only after he rings the bell and has gone
through the door.
D
If you are training your dog to use the
Doggie Doorbell on the outside, you can
stand inside the door. Open the door just
a crack. Call his name and say the
command. As soon as he rings the bell,
open the door to let him in, praise him
happily and reward him.
D
You can also approach the door
together with your dog and ask him to
“Ring the bell!” When he rings the bell,
open the door and praise him.
D
Carry out several short training sessions
every day. And keep them fun.
D
Soon your dog will learn to ring the bell
on his own when he wants to use the door.
Method 2: Target Training
If your dog is already target trained,
training him to ring the Doggie Doorbell
will be very easy. Just treat the push plate
as his new target. Or you can follow the
steps below.
D
Take the adapter cover off the housing.
Hold it in your hand and offer the push
plate to your dog a couple of inches above
his nose.
D
Your dog will naturally try to touch
what you are offering with his nose. As
soon as he gestures, reward him with a
treat. The reward can be in other forms
that motivate your dog.
D
Repeat this process and gradually let
your dog touch the push plate with more
force.
D
Replace the adapter cover onto the
housing.
D
Stand by the Doggie Doorbell and draw
your dog's attention to you.
D
Look at the Doggie Doorbell. Your dog
will figure you want him to do something
and will try to offer a behavior. As soon as
you see the correct behavior, which is
touching the Doggie Doorbell, reward him.
D
Repeat this until your dog nudges the
push plate with enough force to trigger
the receiver.
D
Now transition to opening the door and
letting the dog go through when he
triggers the Doggie Doorbell. Reward him
after he has gone through the door.
D
Soon your dog will associate clearly his
nudging the Doggie Doorbell with the
door opening.
Teach Better Doorbell Manners
It is common for a dog to rush to the door
and go into bark-mode when the house
doorbell rings. Pebble Smart Doggie
Doorbell can be used to teach more
appropriate doorbell manners. You can
take the transmitter out of the adapter
and trigger the “ding-dong” sound while
teaching your dog to stay or be quiet.
Consult a trainer or visit our website for
more information.
Notes
D
If your dog is used to pushing or
scratching the door to be let in, it may
take some persistence to retrain him. First
firmly establish ringing the doorbell on
command. Then try to remind him before
he scratches the door. If he does scratch,
give him a minute before responding. If he
does not ring the bell, ask him to ring the
bell before letting him in.
D
If your dog prefers to use his paws to
touch things, you can train him to ring the
Doggie Doorbell with his paws.
D
If your dog rings the Doggie Doorbell
repeatedly just for getting a treat, instead
of for using the door, you can help him
adjust his behavior by rewarding him only
after he has gone through the door.
D
You
can select different tunes for the
receiver by sliding the side button up.
Each press of the transmitter will activate
a different tune.
D
If the Doggie Doorbell frequently fails
to ring when you push the transmitter, the
AA batteries in the receiver might need to
be replaced.
D
The transmitter comes with a small 12v
battery preinstalled. The battery typically
lasts over a year on average use.
Replacement can be purchased online or
at local electronic stores. To replace the
transmitter battery, use a small flat-blade
screwdriver to pry open the back of the
transmitter.
