1950 TOURBILLON GMT WATCH
Since 1860, Guido Panerai & Figlio in Florence had been producing precision
instruments with a high level of technical content, becoming a supplier to the
Royal Italian Navy. Officine Panerai began to produce watches in 1936 with the
first prototype of the Radiomir. In the following years, several modifications
were made to develop watches which were more resistant under extreme
conditions: the Radiomir 1940 with lugs formed from the same block of the
case and the Luminor 1950 with the innovative device protecting the crown
were born. In 1993, Officine Panerai presented for the first time a collection for
the civilian public, thus becoming one of the undisputed leaders in the haute
horlogerie sports sector.
In honour of its Florentine origins, Officine Panerai has for many years
promoted the genius of Galileo Galilei, the great Tuscan scientist who
revolutionised the history of time measurement by formulating the law of
isochronism. This was the origin of a series of exclusive timepieces of high-
end watchmaking, which with their name “Lo Scienziato” are a tribute to the
memory fundamental legacy of the great physicist, philosopher,
mathematician and astronomer.
The “Laboratorio di Idee” of the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel is
continually searching for new, remarkable solutions to make Panerai watches
even more impressive technically, keeping their unmistakable identity.
The “Lo Scienziato” Collection features the skeletonized version of the calibre
P.2005, a sophisticated hand-wound caliber with a new interpretation of the
Tourbillon, that is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating inventions in
mechanics applied to watchmaking. Its birth is to be attributed to Abraham
Louis-Breguet, who designed it in 1795 and patented it in 1801.
In a traditional Tourbillon the balance-escapement group rotates on its own
