Before You Begin

The PAN-AIRDUCT kit converts the PA-7050 next-generation firewall
chassis cooling from side-to-side airflow to front-to-back airflow (Figure
1). The kit increases the rack unit (RU) size from 9U to 14U.

For detailed information about the PA-7050 hardware, refer to the PA-
7000 Series Hardware Reference Guide and the PA-7050 Quick Start at

https://docs.paloaltonetworks.com/hardware

Important

•

Read this entire document before performing the installation.

•

Power off the PA-7050 firewall, disconnect all cables, and remove
the chassis from the rack or cabinet before proceeding. To reduce
the overall weight of the chassis (recommended), remove the NPCs,
LPC or LFC, SMC, fan trays, and power supplies. If you are removing
components, make note of their locations.

If you remove any of the removable components to reduce the
weight of the chassis, you must do so on an ESD protected surface
and you must wear the provided ESD wrist strap connected
to a grounding point.

•

Ensure that the front and rear of the rack/cabinet are unobstructed to ensure proper front-to-back airflow.

•

Perform this procedure using two to three people and a mechanical lift.

Parts List

The PAN-AIRDUCT includes:

Main Components

•

PA-7050 PAN-AIRDUCT Installation Guide

•

Air Ducts used to direct airflow

•

Top air duct (1 each)

•

Bottom air duct (1 each)

•

2-Post rack bracket (2 each) — used to attach the assembled air duct kit and chassis to a 2-Post rack.

•

4-Post adjustable rack rail (4 each) — used to attach the assembled air duct kit and chassis to a 4-Post rack. You must
slide the rear part of the rack rail off of the front of the rail during the installation. The adjustable rack-rail depth
range is 25” to 30”.

•

Rear brackets (2 each) — used to secure the rear of the chassis to the air ducts in a 2-Post or 4-Post installation. Note
that one side of the bracket has 10 holes, 5 of which are used to secure the bracket to the chassis. Use the 5 holes that
line up with the holes in your chassis.

•

ESD Wrist Strap  — used to prevent electrostatic discharge when handling removable components.

The 2-Post and 4-Post installations require that the existing chassis brackets are in the front mount position and that
the rear chassis brackets are removed. During the PAN-AIRDUCT installation, you will use these brackets to secure the
chassis to the air ducts. If a cable management bracket is installed on the chassis, ensure that the bracket is installed in
the top position, so the cables do not block the bottom air intake. You must use the cable management bracket with the
90-degree angle.

Install in a 2-Post Rack

1.  Ensure that the existing PA-7050 chassis brackets are in the front-

mount position, as shown in Figure 2.

When installing groups of screws for a given component, insert each
screw first and partially tighten it to ensure the screws are properly
aligned. You can then fully tighten based on the torque specified in

        the Parts List.

2.  Place the bottom air duct on a sturdy flat surface with the front air

intake ducts facing you.

3.  While facing the front of the PA-7050 firewall, carefully rotate the

chassis 90 degrees to the right (clockwise) and lay it on its side (power
supplies on the left). Place the chassis on top of the bottom air duct. Be
careful not to damage the gasket located between the chassis and air duct.

4.  Place the top air duct, with the exhaust vents facing the rear of the rack,

on top of the chassis, as shown in Figure 3.

Two spare screws/nuts are provided for each type. Two types of screws are provided for racks with existing
threads (10-32 and 12-24). If your rack has square holes, use 10-32 screws with 10-32 cage nuts. Each screw
must be torqued to the specification provided in the previous table.

5.  Secure the top and bottom chassis brackets located at the front of the chassis

to the air ducts, using four 10-32 X .750 Phillips Pan Head screws for the top
brackets and four 10-32 X .750 screws for the bottom brackets. See Figure 4.
