Vertical Vent Termination
• Terminate at least 1.8m (6') from the
combustion air intake of any appliance,
and 0.9m (3') from any
other building opening, gas utility meter,
service regulator etc.
• Enclose exterior vent systems below the
roof line to limit condensation and
protect against mechanical failure.
• When the vent penetrates a floor or
ceiling and is not
running in a fire rated shaft, a firestop
and support is required.
• When the vent termination is located not
less than 2.4m (8') from a vertical wall or
similar obstruction, terminate above the
roof at least 0.6m (2'), but not more than
1.8m (6'), in accordance with the Na-
tional Fuel Gas Code ANSI Z223.1/
NFPA 54.
• Provide vertical support every 3.6m (12')
or as required by the vent pipe
manufacturer's instructions.
• A short horizontal section is recom-
mended to prevent debris from falling
into the water heater.
• Install a condensation drain in the
horizontal section of the venting.
• Slope the horizontal section 1/4" for
every 300mm (12") toward the drain tee.

• Inspection openings are suggested for the vent intake and exhaust
pipes if they are installed in an enclosure. These openings should
be near the entrance and exit of the vent into the enclosure.
• These openings should be 450mm x 450mm (18" x 18").
