The UNICARB process, developed by the Union Carbide Corporation,
mixes super-critical CO
2
with coating materials (resins).
When CO
2
reaches a super-critical stage [at a pressure of 73.7 bar
(1,070 psi) and a temperature of 31
_
C (87
_
F), it acts as a diluent and
lowers the viscosity of the coating materials to normal spray levels. This
reduces the use of organic solvents by up to 80 percent.
The system supplies the mixture to the handgun(s) at a pressure of
82.7–172.3 bar (1200–2500 psi) and a temperature of 38–82
_
C
(100–180
_
F).
See the documentation supplied with your Nordson UNICARB system for
further information.
NOTE: The coating materials must be specially formulated for use with
the UNICARB systems. Contact your Nordson representative, the Union
Carbide Corporation, or your coatings formulator for a suitable coating.
