Long Time-Exposures (M Mode Only)
Shutter speeds of “bulb” and “time” can be used
for long time-exposure photographs of moving
lights, the stars, night scenery, or fireworks. To
prevent blurring caused by camera shake, use a
tripod and an optional remote control or remote
cord (

203).

Ready the camera.
Mount the camera on a tripod or place it on a stable, level surface. To prevent
loss of power before the exposure is complete, use a fully charged EN-EL9a
battery or an optional EH-5a AC adapter and EP-5 power connector. Note that
noise may be present in long exposures; before shooting, choose
On
for the
Long exp. NR
option in the shooting menu (
0
148). If you are using an
optional remote cord, attach it to the camera.

Rotate the mode dial to
M
.

Choose a shutter speed.
Rotate the command dial until “Bulb”
(
A
) appears in the viewfinder or
information display.
For a shutter speed of
“Time” (

), select delayed remote or quick-
response remote mode after choosing the
shutter speed (

65).

Description
Bulb
Shutter remains open while shutter-release button is held down. Tripod and
optional MC-DC2 remote cord are recommended to prevent blur.
Time
Optional ML-L3 wireless remote control required (

203). Shutter opens when
shutter-release button on remote control is pressed and remains open for thirty
minutes or until shutter-release button is pressed a second time.
