Beyond Point-and-Shoot—Making Movies

Making Movies (P, S, A, and M)

Movie Mode

In

P

S

A

, and

modes, the COOLPIX4500 can record movies up to thirty-

five seconds in length at a rate of about fifteen frames per second, with sound
recorded via the camera’s built-in microphone.  Each frame is 320

×

240 pix-

els in size (QVGA).  To record a movie:

1

Choose an exposure mode of

P

S

A

, or

M

.

2

In the shooting menu, select

Continuous

:

Movie

 (

 96).  When you

return to shooting mode, the exposure count display will show the length
of the movie that can be recorded.

3

Press the shutter-release button all the way
down to begin recording.  If

Auto-Focus Mode

(

 111) is set to

Single AF

 (the default set-

ting), focus will lock when the shutter-release
button is pressed.  During recording, optical zoom is disabled; only digital
zoom can be used.  If lens section is rotated to point in the same direction
as the monitor, the image in the monitor will be inverted and the movie
will be recorded upside down.

4

Press the shutter-release button all the way
down a second time to end recording (record-
ing will end automatically thirty-five seconds
after recording starts or if no more memory is
available on the memory card).  The movie will be stored as a QuickTime
movie file with a file name ending in “.MOV”.

Movies can not be recorded unless the monitor is on.  The flash turns off
automatically in movie mode.
