3. Ambient Temperature, Capacity and Life
3.1
Relationship between Ambient Temperature and Capacity
VRLA batteries can be used in very low or high temperature (below -15
º
C or
above 45
º
C). However the battery data such as capacity life and floating voltage are
measured with temperature between 20º
C-25º
C as a standard. The capacity of the
battery will decrease with lower temperature as shown in Fig. 3-1 below.

As represented by the graph above, the capacity of the battery will decrease when
the temperature is too low. For example, if the temperature decreases from 25º
C to
0º
C, the capacity will be decrease to85% of the nominal capacity. The battery will be
in a less-charged state with lower temperature and this will lead to battery failure in
discharging and the active material in the negative plate to saltilize.
