Introduction of the New G-Class, Model Series 463
The permanent all-wheel drive also ensures powerful
start-off and acceleration characteristics even in poor
weather conditions such as rain, ice or snow.
The two rigid axles with high twist capability and the
long spring travels provide the necessary ground
clearance and excellent traction to allow the perma-
nent all-wheel drive to perform at its best.
The combination of the electronic traction system with
a transfer case with three 100% lockable differentials
is a unique selling proposition of the G-Class.
The permanent all wheel drive distributes the power
between the front and rear axles at a ratio of 50:50.
The electronic traction system can brake up to three
wheels with poor ground adhesion and always
precisely apply the engine power to the wheels with
the best ground adhesion. This allows the vehicle to
better master snowy and icy road surfaces.
The differential locks in the drivetrain ensure that the
driving power is applied to the wheels with the best
traction. They can be individually engaged using
buttons on the center console up to a speed of
40 km/h if the transfer case is in the "Low" reduction
mode. In this case, ground adhesion is only required
on one wheel in order to move the vehicle forwards.
The gear ratio in the transfer case provides maximum
traction on difficult surfaces such as a mud or sand.
