Brake Pad Wear Indicator Lamp
The brake pad wear indicator lamp in
the instrument cluster comes on when
the key in the steering lock is turned to
position 2 and it must go out when the
engine is running. If the indicator lamp
lights up during braking, this shows
that the front wheel brake pads are
worn down.
Have the brake system checked at an
authorized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer
as soon as possible.
Brake Fluid
Brake fluid should be changed once a
year, preferably in spring.
Only use brake fluid recommended
by us. For further information, refer to
"Fuels, Coolants, Lubricants etc.” .
The low brake fluid indicator lamp will
come on if insufficient brake fluid is in
the reservoir. (The key must be in
steering lock position 2, and the park­
ing brake released.)
When the minimum mark on the
reservoir is reached, have the system
checked (brake lining thickness,
leaks).
Charge Indicator Lamp
Should the charge indicator lamp fail
to come on prior to starting when the
key is in steering lock position 2 or
should it fail to go out after starting or
during operation, this indicates a fault
which must be repaired at an
authorized MERCEDES-BENZ dealer
as soon as possible.
When the charging indicator lamp
glows while the engine is running, the
V-belt may have been broken (which
also makes the water pump inopera­
tive). This may cause overheating and
damage to the engine. In this case
the V-belt must be renewed at once.
Oil Pressure Gauge
The oil pressure at idle speed may
drop to 0.3 bar/4.4 psi if the engine is at
operating temperature. This will not
jeopardize its operational reliability.
Pressure must, however, rise imme­
diately upon acceleration.
Low Engine Oil Level Indicator
Lamp
The indicator lamp comes on with the
key in steering lock position 2 and
should go out when the engine is run­
ning.
If it comes on with the engine running
and at operating temperature, the oil
level has dropped to the minimum
mark on the dipstick. If this occurs, the
indicator lamp will first come on inter­
mittently and then stay on if the oil level
drops further and oil needs to be ad­
ded. We recommend that you add 11/
1.1 US qt if the indicator lamp stays on.
In addition to the indicator lamp, the
engine oil level should be periodically
checked with the dipstick, for example
after a fuel fill-up, or before a long trip
(see page 64).
