5.3.4 Comparing your test results
with a laboratory result
The question of how you can compare the blood glucose
level of the monitor with tests performed in the laboratory is
frequently asked.
Your blood glucose level can change quickly, especially after
a meal, after taking medicine or strenuous activities. Your
blood glucose is affected by various factors and has different
values at different times of the day.
If you would like to compare the test result of your monitor
with a laboratory result, you must do the blood glucose test
on an empty stomach. Therefore, it is advisable to do this in
the morning. Take your monitor with you to the doctor’s
and test yourself five minutes before or after a trained nurse
has taken a blood sample from you.
Take into account that the technology in the laboratory is
different from your monitor and that blood glucose monitors
for using at home generally produce slightly different results.
To ensure the accuracy and precision of such important
information, read the instructions included with the blood
glucose test strips.
NOTE
Make sure that you always record your test
results with the date and time in your diabetes
diary and label with the appropriate symbol for
before a meal ,
after a meal ,
morning ,
midday ,
evening and night .
