Functional test

WARNING:

Regulations for the use of GMDSS equipment require that the operators

of these radios must be authorised to use them; the Regulations also specify the
environments in which the radios may be used.

The functional test involves verifying the operation of the radio on all three
communication channels.

Another radio, which is known to be operational and which covers Channels 6, 13
and 16, is required for this test. Note that this radio does not have to be a Model R1,
although testing is simplified if this is the case.

The two radios should be separated by a convenient distance (in excess of 10m is
recommended) and two-way communication should be established. This
communication must then be checked on all three channels.

Regulations require that test calls on Channel 16 must be limited to a maximum
duration of 10 seconds.

3.3.   Battery replacement

The radio battery is a single component. There are two versions to match the two
colours of radio:

Part number 84-100 (orange) for McMurdo R1 radio
Part number 84-101 (yellow) for SOS Rescue radio

The battery has a storage life of 4 years, and should be replaced if its expiry date is
prior to the next scheduled inspection of the radio, if the seal on the battery is broken
or missing, or after the radio has been used.

Disposal of batteries

Lithium battery packs should be discharged slowly, then disposed of through an
approved environmental disposal agent, or in accordance with local regulations.

The rate of discharge must not exceed 100mA. It is recommended to discharge
through a resistance of a minimum value of 10 ohms per volt of the nominal battery
voltage eg a resistor of 100 ohms (2W rating) is satisfactory for a 9V battery.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE MAY THE BATTERY BE SHORT-CIRCUITED.

If the battery shows signs of electrolyte leakage, do not attempt to discharge. Refer to
the Warnings section for advice on correct handling.
