Terms
Definition
Safety shutdown
A type of operating interruption which allows an orderly shutdown of the machine for safety purposes and which maintains
the program logic to facilitate resuming operations (ref. UNI EN ISO 10218-1:2009 point 3.17).
Customer
The person who purchased the Machine and/or who manages it and uses it regularly (e.g.: company, entrepreneur,
business, etc.).
Safety device
A device (other than a guard) that eliminates or reduces risks; it can be used alone or be associated with a guard.
Emergency stop
device
A set of components intended for the emergency stop function; the device is operated with a single action and prevents
or reduces damage being caused to people, machines or property.

– In the case of a tender for the
installation of the machine, the Customer's works manager must verify the technical and professional suitability of the
executing company and promotes cooperation and coordination between the companies, and particularly processes
and delivers this document.
Operator, user
The person assigned to the installation, setting, use, maintenance, cleaning, repairs and transport of the machine.
Collaborative
operation
The state in which the specifically designed machines work in direct collaboration with one or more persons within a
defined workspace (ref. UNI EN ISO 10218-1:2009 point 3.4).
Hazard
Source of possible injury or harm to one's health.
Trained
personnel
Personnel who have been informed and trained on the tasks to be performed and the hazards involved (e.g.: line
workers)
Authorised
personnel
Skilled personnel assigned by the customer to perform certain tasks
Skilled personnel
Operators who, based on their training, experience, knowledge of the relevant regulations and safety standards, can
assess the tasks that have been assigned to them and recognise and prevent any hazards (e.g.: electrical technicians)
Protections
Safety measures that consist of using specific technical means (guards and safety devices) to protect the workers from
hazards
Guard
Part of a machine used in a specific way to provide protection by means of a physical barrier; depending on its
construction it can be called a cap, cover, screen, door, enclosure, casing, isolation, etc.
Risk
A combination of probability and severity of possible injuries or harm to one's health in a dangerous situation
Protected space Space defined by the perimeter of the safety devices (ref. UNI EN ISO 10218-1:2009), if applicable.
Dangerous
situation
Any situation in which an operator is exposed to one or more hazards
