8 STEERING AND BRAKES
8.1 Steering
Your vehicle is equipped with manual steering. You may observe a substantial
increase in steering effort, especially at very low vehicle speeds and during parking
maneuvers.
When driving in rough/off roads, hold the steering wheel firmly. A sudden bump
can jerk/ turn the wheel and injure your hand. This may also lead to loss of
vehicle control.
If the steering wanders or pulls, check for:
•
Under inflated tire(s) on any wheel(s)
•
Uneven vehicle loading
•
High crown (mound) in the centre of the road
•
High crosswinds
•
Wheels out of alignment
•
Wheels out of balance
•
Loose or worn suspension components
8.2 Braking
U52J01
To apply the parking brake, pull the park brake lever up as firmly as possible. When
the parking brake is applied with the ignition ON, the brake warning lamp in the
instrument cluster illuminates. To release the parking brake, pull the parking brake
lever up slightly, press the release button on the lever tip and lower the parking
brake lever completely.
The brake warning lamp indicates only the parking brake status. It does not
indicate the degree of brake application. Be sure the parking brake is firmly set
when parked and the gear shift lever is in gear. When parking on a hill you
should apply the parking brake before placing the shift lever gear, since the load
on the transmission locking mechanism may make it difficult to move the shift
lever out of gear.
Be sure the parking brake is fully disengaged before driving off. Failure to do so
can lead to brake problems due to excessive heating of the rear brakes.
