DESCRIPTION
HOW FILTRATION WORKS: Biological and mechanical filtration are essential
to every pond; without them debris and ammonia from accumulated fish
waste would harm your fish.
Biological filtration uses bacteria on filter media to nitrifiy the ammonia in
a pond, where mechanical filtration removes only debris. Both of these
filtration techniques combined are called bio-mechanical filtration, and
provide a cleaner pond and healthier environment for your aquatic life.
HOW BIO-MECHANICAL FILTRATION EXCELS: Bio-mechanical filtration
uses a colony of bacteria on the surface of the filter media to convert
dissolved nitrogenous waste to harmless compounds. When the bacteria
are given the proper environment, they grow in a thin biofilm on the surface
of each piece of media. The larger the surface area, the larger the bacterial
colony.
SAFETY GUIDELINES
Read all instructions thoroughly. Failure to follow the instructions could
result in serious bodily injury and/or property damage.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION: 2” valves are supplied with PTFE tape already applied to the
unions. It may be necessary, however, to apply more PTFE tape if the valve
leaks upon installation. DO NOT use any sealant other than PTFE tape, as
this can cause the valve to crack or leak, either immediately or over time.
DO NOT over-tighten the unions. HAND TIGHTEN ONLY. DO NOT use any
tools. Use care during installation; problems resulting from over-tightened
unions and/or the use of any sealant or putty will not be covered under
warranty.
CAUTION: For the pressurized bead filter to perform bio-mechanical
filtration, the media must first establish itself enough to process the dissolved
ammonia. Depending on temperature, climate, weather conditions, fish
load, and feed rates, this can take 2 - 4 weeks. Until the bacteria colony
has grown large enough, the pond owner MUST monitor the ammonia and
nitrates in the water and correct dangerously high levels.
CAUTION: In a pond with heavy algae content, change the water before
installing the filter.
NOTE: For ease of maintenance, install a ball valve between the pump and
the filter, and a check valve between the filter and the pond.
