FilerÕs Disk Operations
The function keys for the disk operations are accessed by pressing the disK
function key (or
K
).
Space Available
It is a good practice to defragment the disk before the available space reaches
zero. The
/User disk is automatically checked when OPEN first runs, and the
percent space available on this disk is displayed in OPENÕs main screen.

To find the space available on a disk:
1 In the FILER, press the
disK
function key (or
K
).
The Disk function keys appear.
2 Press
Space
(or
S
).
A list of the disks appears.
3 Select a disk and press
Enter
.
The space used and the space available is displayed (Figure 10-13). Press any
key to return to the FILER.
Defragmenting Disks
It is periodically necessary to defragment the disks to reclaim space occupied
by inactive files. During defragmentation, all active files are copied onto the
Hidden disk (see
Using the Hidden Disk on page 10-19). The original disk
is then reformatted and all inactive files are purged. The active files are then
copied back to the original disk.
The time required to defragment a disk depends upon how much disk space
is to be reclaimed, and the number of inactive files that must be purged. As
an example, a disk containing one large file takes only about half a minute to
defragment, whereas a disk that contains a lot of smaller files and directories
can take several minutes.
