Static IP address
Use a static IP address if one is available for purchase and it is affordable.
l
Advantages: The RV50X will always have the same IP address, so you will be
able to connect with your devices from any networked computer by entering
the IP address. A static IP address is the simplest way to ensure that your devices
can communicate with each other.

Disadvantages: Static IP addresses are not available in some regions. Static IP
addresses may cost $500 for an unlimited time, depending on the service pro-
vider. They may not be available from your cellular service provider. See
Table
A-2 below for a list of Static IP address providers.

Dynamic IP address
Use a dynamic IP address when you only need to get information from the devices,
when a static IP address is not available, or if a static IP address is too costly.

Advantages: There are no additional fees as there are with the static IP address.
Dynamic IP addresses are not limited to regional availability.

Disadvantages: Since the IP address is assigned by the Internet service provider
or device, it may change frequently. You will need to enlist the services of a
Dynamic Domain Name Server (DDNS) to connect with your instruments
online. A DDNS makes a dynamic IP address act like a static IP address by track-
ing the device IP address when it changes, and providing it to you. Several com-
panies provide this service free of charge or at low cost. See
Table A-3 on the
next page for a list of DDNS service providers.
A dynamic IP address is one that is assigned—typically by a service provider—and
that may change whenever the device restarts. The trouble with this is that you
must know the IP address of the RV50X in order to connect to it. If the IP address
