2. Place a soft, clean towel or cloth on the desk or other flat surface. Hold the sides of your computer and
gently lay it down so that the screen is against the surface and the cover is facing up.
3. Remove the computer cover. See “Removing the computer cover” on page 80.
4. Locate the microprocessor on the system board. See “Locating major FRUs and CRUs” on page 70.
5. Remove the heat sink assembly to gain access to the microprocessor. See “Replacing the heat sink
assembly” on page 99.

7. Carefully lift the microprocessor straight up and out of the microprocessor socket.
Notes:
• Your microprocessor and socket might look different from the one illustrated.
• Touch only the edges of the microprocessor. Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom.
• Do not drop anything onto the microprocessor socket while it is exposed. The socket pins must be
kept as clean as possible.
