Removing and replacing Tier 1 CRUs
Use this information for removing and replacing Tier 1 CRUs.
Replacement of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If a Lenovo approved warranty service provider installs a
Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation. The illustrations in this document
might differ slightly from your hardware.
Removing the microprocessor air baffle
Use this information to remove the microprocessor air baffle.
To remove the microprocessor air baffle, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Read the safety information and installation guidelines, see “Safety” on page v and “Installation
guidelines” on page 38.
Step 2. Turn off the server (see “Turning off the server” on page 23) and all attached peripheral devices.
Disconnect all power cords; then, disconnect all external cables as necessary to replace the device.
Step 3. Remove the server cover (see “Removing the server top cover” on page 216).
Step 4. Grasp the baffle by the grip points and lift it all the way up out of the slots on the chassis wall and
set it aside.

Attention: For proper cooling and airflow, replace the air baffle before you turn on the server.
Operating the server with the air baffle removed might damage server components.
Replacing the microprocessor air baffle
Use this information to replace the microprocessor air baffle.
To install the microprocessor air baffle, complete the following steps:
Step 1. Read the safety information and installation guidelines, see “Safety” on page v and “Installation
guidelines” on page 38.
Step 2. Align the tabs on the air baffle behind the latches (front and rear latches) of the two DIMMs closest
to the microprocessor (DIMM on the left and DIMM on the right of the microprocessor); then,
lower the air baffle down until it is seated firmly.
