Picking up Square Bales
3 or 4 Lower Spears: BS(E)30, BS(E)40, BS(E)50
a. Position spear points about 1/4 to 1/3 up from the
bottom of a square bale.
b. Check to make sure both outside spears will
penetrate the bale. If not, recenter on the bale.
c. With spears level, drive them straight into the bale
until they are fully inserted and bale is against the
hitch frame.
d. If spear extensions are attached and you are
picking up two bales with one on top of the other,
make sure the spikes on end of extensions are
fully inserted into the upper square bale.
e. Continue with step 5 on page 15.
1 Upper & 3 Lower Spears: BS(E)40
a. Position lower spear points about 1/4 to 1/3 up
from the bottom of a square bale.
b. Center spear point should be about 1/4 to 1/3
down from the top.
c. Check to make sure both outside spears will
penetrate the bale. If needed, recenter on bale.
d. With spears level, drive them straight into the bale
until they are fully inserted and bale is against the
hitch frame.
e. If spear extensions are attached and you are
picking up two bales, make sure the spikes on end
of extensions are fully inserted into the upper
square bale.
f. Continue with step 5 below.
Picking up Round Bales
1 Upper Spear & 3 Lower Spears: BS(E)40
a. Position the two center spear points equal
distances up and down from the bale’s center.
b. Check to make sure the two outside spears miss
the bale strings. If needed lower center spears
down until outside spears clear the strings.
c. With spears level, drive center spears straight into
the bale until they are fully inserted and bale is
against the hitch frame.
d. Continue with step 5 below.
1 Upper Spear & 2 Lower Spikes: BS(E)40
a. Center upper spear point on a round bale or a
small distance vertically above center.
b. Check to make sure the two lower spikes will
penetrate the bale. If lower spikes are positioned
outside of the bale, adjust spear height up until
spikes will insert into the bale.
c. With upper spear level, drive it and the two spikes
straight into the bale until they are fully inserted
and bale is against the hitch frame.
d. Continue with step 5 below.
2 Upper Spikes & 4 Lower Spears: SB(E)50
a. Two bales must be placed side by side tight
against each other.
b. As close as possible, align the upper two spikes
on the vertical centerline of the two bales.
c. Position lower spear points about 1/3 up from the
bottom of the bales.
d. Check to make sure the spears will penetrate the
bales. If not, adjust spears up until all spears will
penetrate the bales.
e. With spears level, drive them straight into the
bales until they and upper spikes are fully inserted
and bales are against the hitch frame.
f. Continue with step 5 below.
5. Lift bale or bales off the ground a short distance and
tilt spear points up 5 - 10 degrees from horizontal.
6. Check to make sure the bale is or bales are properly
secured before traveling.
Traveling with Bales
1.
Check for overhead obstructions.
2. While stopped, raise bale to an appropriate transport
height. Make sure the bale does not hinder line of
sight going forward. When possible, keep bale as
close to the ground as possible while traveling.
3. If bale blocks your view, travel in reverse.
4. Continually scan all sides for pedestrians, animals,
and other traffic.
5. Always drive at a safe speed and slow down when
going around corners. Avoid sudden braking.
6. Leave enough clearance when turning to avoid
making contact with obstacles such as buildings,
trees, or fences.
7.
When traveling over a ramp or incline, keep bale on
the “uphill” side of tractor/skid steer.
8. When possible, travel straight up and straight down
grades, ramps, and inclines keeping the bale low.
Avoid making turns on grades, ramps, and inclines.
9. Raise or lower bale only when stopped, never while
traveling.
10. Avoid transporting loads on public roadways. When
transporting on public roadways, transport in such a
way that faster moving vehicles may pass you safely.
IMPORTANT:
Review
14 before transporting a bale.
IMPORTANT:
If bales are not stable, lower bales,
remove spears, and pick bales up entering the
spears in a new more stable location.
IMPORTANT:
Always keep spear points tilted up
5 to 10 degrees from horizontal throughout the lifting
range of the loader.
