VIDEO SYNC AND RELATED PROBLEMS

All video signals arriving at a monitor carry with them synchronization information. Whether they are analog

signals (Composite,  Y/C, Component and RGB)  or digital (SDI, etc.)  synchronization  signals are needed  for

proper  alignment  of  the  image  on  the  screen.  Many  sync  related  problems  mis-diagnosed,  and  other

components of the signals are blamed.

Sync Types

In most known video formats, there are two types of sync signals – horizontal and vertical sync.  The horizontal

sync, often referred to as the line sync in a composite video signal, is a short, negative pulse at the beginning of

each scan line of the monitor. The number of line sync pulses equals the number of video lines. Basically, this

pulse tells the monitor – “be prepared – a line of data is coming”.  The horizontal sync resides in the blanking

area – the unseen part of the signal, where it is not seen on the screen.
