WARNING – Failure to observe this warn-

ing may result in serious injury

The safety alert symbol on the nameplate

means:

Read these instructions for use, observe the spec-

ifications, and follow the safety instructions.

The SE715 amperometric oxygen sensor is equipped

with Memosens technology. This provides applica-

tion benefits, e.g., safe function thanks to perfect

galvanic isolation, digital data transmission, and

 integrated sensor diagnostics.

The plug connector is resistant to dirt and moisture.

Calibration data, the operating time, sensor name,

and serial number are stored in the sensor head.

The serial number can also be found on the quality

certificate and the packaging label.

1  Safety Instructions

The sensor contains a liquid electrolyte. Protective

goggles and gloves should be worn when carrying

out maintenance work, e.g., membrane or electro-

lyte replacement.

The sensor is designed for a maximum operating

pressure of 3 bar and complies with the pressure

equipment directive 97/23/EC, Article 3(3).

During installation, take care not to damage the

plastic body or the thread (PG 13.5).

2  Intended Use

The sensor is designed for simultaneous measure-

ment of dissolved oxygen and temperature in indus-

trial processes, particularly in the fields of drinking

water, wastewater, water purification, activation,

 aeration control, fish farming, fishkeeping.

3  Installation and Commissioning

 •

On unpacking, check the sensor for mechanical

damage. Report any damage to your Knick service

team.

 •

Remove the watering cap and briefly rinse the

 sensor with clean water.

 •

Insert the sensor into the fitting as described in the

fitting’s user manual or mount the adapter ZU0939

to use it with the sensor quiver of a Portavo porta-

ble meter.

Take care not to damage the sensor

membrane.

 •

The sensor can be operated vertically or inclined up

to 15° off horizontal.

 •

Connect the sensor to the cable.

Note:

Prior to commissioning, the sensor must be

polarized on a transmitter. Polarization should last at

least 30 minutes, after which time the sensor is ready

for operation.

4  Operation

4.1 Calibrating the Sensor

Calibration in air is recommended for the SE715

sensor. Rinse the sensor with clean water and gently

dab the membrane dry. Refer to the user manual of

the oxygen transmitter for further details. The cal-

culated calibration data (slope, temperature, time of

calibration) is stored directly in the sensor. Memosens

sensors can also be pre-calibrated in the laboratory. In

this case, on-site calibration is not required.

4.2 Temperature Detector

The integrated temperature detector is primarily in-

tended for automatic compensation of the measur-

ing signal, not for high-precision and safe tempera-

ture indication or control of the process temperature.

5  Maintenance and Cleaning

Observe the safety instructions listed above when

performing maintenance work on the sensor.

Clean the sensor with clean water after each produc-

tion cycle and regularly in the case of severe contam-

ination.

5.1  Replacing the Membrane

Hold the sensor upright and carefully unscrew the

membrane cap. Fill electrolyte into a new membrane

cap (see package contents). Carefully screw the mem-

brane cap back on. Rinse the sensor with clean water.

5.2 Cleaning the Cathode

Note:

The sanding procedure specified below should

only be carried out if the cathode is severely contam-

inated.
Visible deposits on the cathode can be removed with

fine sandpaper (package contents). To do so, lay the

sandpaper on a horizontal surface and place a drop of

water on the paper. Remove the membrane cap from

the sensor and move the cathode very carefully in a

circular motion over the sandpaper. Hold the sensor

upright and exert no pressure. Rinse the cathode with

clean water, fill a new membrane cap with electro-

lyte, and carefully screw the membrane cap onto the

sensor. Rinse the sensor with clean water.

5.3 Cleaning the Anode

The anode (silver/silver chloride) has a brown to violet

color and does not require cleaning.
