SE 558
Manual
4 Operation
4.1 Calibrating the Sensor
2-point calibration is recommended for the SE 558
sensor. First remove the watering cap. Then dip the
sensor successively into two different buffer solutions
with given pH values (eg pH 7.00 and pH 4.00) and
calibrate the pH transmitter to these buffer values.
Please refer to the user manual of the pH transmitter
for further details.
4.2 Temperature Detector
The integrated temperature detector is intended for
automatic compensation of the pH signal and not for
any precise and safe temperature indication or con-
trol of the process temperature (see “Further Data”
for type).
5 Maintenance and Cleaning
Carefully rinse the sensor tip and junction with pure
water after each operating cycle. Under no circum-
stances must measuring solution be allowed to dry
on these parts!
When the sensor is not in operation, store it with sen-
sor tip and junction well submerged in electrolyte
(3 mol/l KCl). If a sensor is stored dry for a few days
by mistake, let it soak in electrolyte for several hours
before use.
Contaminants can be removed as follows:
Protein:
Solution of pepsin / HCl
Lime:
Dilute acids
Silver sulfide:
Solution of thiourea / HCl
Grease:
Tenside solution / lye

Instructions for Use for the SE 558 pH Sensors
1 Safety Information
1.1 General Information
!
CAUTION
To ensure proper functioning, read these instruc-
tions carefully before putting the sensor into opera-
tion. Operation and servicing of the sensor should be
carried out by specially trained personnel.
Please take extra care during installation/fitting of
the sensor to ensure that neither the polymer body
nor the thread (Pg 13.5) suffer any damage.
1.2 Application in Hazardous Locations
!
WARNING
The sensor may be connected to intrinsically safe cir-
cuits. To ensure safe use, observe the electrical input
ratings in accordance with the temperature classes
as specified in the EC-Type Examination Certificate.
The input ratings are safety limit values which must
not be exceeded.
If the stated medium temperatures are adhered to,
no impermissible temperatures for the respective
temperature class will occur on the equipment.
If the sensor has been connected to non-intrin-
sically-safe circuits, it may only be reconnected to
intrinsically safe circuits following an inspection for
compliance with explosion protection requirements.
The provisions of EN 60079-10 / EN 60079-14 or the
corresponding local regulations must be met during
installation and commissioning of the sensor in haz-
ardous locations. See the Type Examination Certifi-
cate for electrical input ratings.
The sensor may be used in constantly, long-term or
frequently hazardous locations. Prior to installation,
the installation site and its potential explosion haz-
ard must be assessed and the suitability of the sen-
sors determined.
Incorrect installation or handling of the sensor may
impair its explosion protection and result in ignition
of an explosive atmosphere. The following points
must therefore be strictly adhered to when using
the sensor in hazardous locations:
•
In hazardous locations the sensor may only be in-
stalled by specially trained personnel authorized
by the operating company. Installation shall be
performed in accordance with the relevant regu-
lations and the electrical input ratings provided in
the Type Examination Certificate.
•
The sensor shall be installed, commissioned and
operated in accordance with these instructions
for use.
•
Make sure that the sensor is properly mounted
and that the O-rings are not damaged. Only this
ensures that IP 67 protection is maintained.
2 Intended Use
The sensors of the SE 558 series are particularly suit-
able for continuous measurement of pH values in me-
dia of low conductivity. They are low-maintenance
pH sensors with gel reference electrolyte. The sensor
has an integrated temperature detector for automatic
temperature compensation of the pH signal during
calibration and operation. It provides 3 ceramic junc-
tions and a KCl reservoir.
3 Installation and Commissioning
•
On unpacking, check the sensor for mechanical
damage. Report any damage to your Knick service
team.
•
Remove the watering cap and briefly rinse the
sensor with clean water. After rinsing, the sensor
should only be dabbed dry with a tissue. Do not
rub the pH-sensitive glass, since this can lead to
electrostatic charging and sluggish response times.
•
Check the space behind the pH-sensitive glass for
the presence of any air bubbles and remove them
by gently swinging the sensor in a vertical plane.
•
Install the sensor in the fitting as described in the
user manual of the respective fitting.
•
Connect sensor and cable.
