RS-3: Connect to the “Rear” or “Surround” channel speaker outputs of your  system’s power amplifier.
When connecting surround speakers to the rear channels of a 5.1 channel system, it is important that
they are hooked up to the appropriate left and right rear channels as the surround effects are in stereo.

LINE LEVEL CONNECTIONS / RP-3 AND RP-5 ONLY (optional)

Switch your electronics OFF when making all connections! These connections should be made using
high quality shielded interconnect cables terminated with RCA phono plugs. These cables should be as
short as possible and kept away from noise-generating electrical equipment, such as digital electronics
or electric motors. Consult your Klipsch dealer for specific cable recommendations.

LINE IN

This input is only used to drive the powered subwoofer portion of your RP-3 or RP-5. Using this
connection will generally result in improved clarity and definition in the bass. This input should be con-
nected to a non-filtered (full range) subwoofer or main channel pre-amp output on your electronics.
Note: If you use a mono subwoofer output to feed both left and right subwoofers, any stereo bass infor-
mation will be reproduced as a mono signal.
When using this input, remove the gold metal coupling
straps that join the two pairs of binding posts and connect your speaker cable only to the “HIGH IN”
speaker terminals. The “LINE IN” input must not be your only connection to the speaker. This input
can also be used in conjunction with the LFE input described below.

LINE OUT

This output is provided to feed the line level signal to your other speaker if it is difficult or inconvenient
to connect both directly to the line output on your electronics. Note: If you use a mono subwoofer output
to feed both left and right subwoofers, any stereo bass information will be reproduced as a mono signal.

LFE IN (optional)

This input is used with the newest 5.1 (six channel) surround sound systems. The LFE channel contains
bass effects information that is different than the bass signals present in the other channels to enhance the
soundtrack’s impact. The “LFE IN” input on the RP-3 and RP-5 requires a low pass filtered signal (high
frequencies removed) from your electronic’s subwoofer or LFE output. Do not connect this input to a full
range (unfiltered) pre-amp output.
The peak level of this signal can be up to 10 decibels louder than main
channel bass signals, so caution should be exercised when connecting to this output and initially adjusting
the “BASS CONTOUR” control. The “LFE IN” must not be the only connection to the speaker. The
“SPEAKER IN” and “LINE IN” connections are the primary hookups. The “LFE IN” is compatible with
either line level or speaker level connections.

LFE OUT (optional)

This output is provided to feed the LFE signal to the other speaker if it is difficult or inconvenient to con-
nect both directly to the LFE output on your electronics.

BASS MANAGEMENT

Most surround sound electronics are equipped with a bass management system that permits the selection
of either a full- or limited-range (filtered) operation for each speaker. You will normally configure the
main channels of your surround processor for the “Large” or “Full Range” setting and the center and sur-
round channels for the “Small” or “Limited Range” setting. The subwoofer or LFE channel should have
its low pass filter engaged when connecting to the optional “LFE IN” on the RP-3 and RP-5. Consult
your Klipsch dealer for more specifics on the bass management options of your electronics.

CONTROLS / RP-3 AND RP-5 ONLY

Bass Contour

This control adjusts the volume of only the lower bass frequencies produced by the subwoofer section of
the RP-3 and RP-5. This allows you to compensate for the significant effects of room acoustics and speaker
placement on the bass range without effecting the subwoofer’s proper blend with the high frequency sec-
tion of the speaker. For initial setup, try the “FLAT” position (full counterclockwise) and then increase as
desired. This is the primary bass adjustment control effecting the Speaker, Line and LFE inputs.

LINE  LEVEL (optional )

This control adjusts the volume of the entire bass range of the RP-3 or RP-5 subwoofer section only
when using the “LINE IN” input. This allows you to achieve a proper bass to mid frequency balance if
the line output level from your electronics is unusually high or low. For initial setup, use the “NORMAL”
control position and then adjust as required. Extreme settings of this control will effect the blend between
the bass and mid frequencies, causing a peak or dip in response.
