The batteries are trickle charged when external power is
connected to the unit. Both batteries are fully charged after 40
hours. The batteries discharge if the unit is left unpowered for a
few weeks.
The secondary battery is only used if the low battery LED is lit. The
system software automatically switches from the primary to the
secondary battery when the primary battery voltage is too low.
