Note that they shold be engaged when the user gets in and out of the
wheelchair to prevent if from sliding.
5.15.2 Flip up the footplate when getting in and out. It can prevent the chair
from tipping to the front and make transferring easier.
5.15.3 Make sure that the controller is turned off.
CAUTION
●
Always ensure that the front casters are in line with the rear wheels
and pointing forwards and that the back of the chair is secure either
against a wall or firmly held by an attendant.
5.16 Getting In
5.16.1 Engage the freewheel levers and make sure that the controller is turned
off.
5.16.2 Turn up the foot plates and swing footrest to the side.
5.16.3 The user should now lower themselves into the seat using the armrests
as supports.
5.16.4 Turn the foot plates back down and re-locate the footrests so that the
user can place his feet upon them.
5.17 Getting Out
5.17.1 Make sure that the chair is as close as possible to your transfer point.
5.17.2 Back the chair sufficiently to ensure that the casters are pointing
forward i.e. in line with the rear wheels and usually with the caster forks
pointing forward. Ensure that where possible the rear of the chair is
against a wall or, if not, it must be firmly held by an attendant.
5.17.3 Engage the freewheel levers and make sure that the controller is turned
off.
5.17.4 Turn up the foot plates and swing the footrests to the side.
5.17.5 Slide forwards on the seat.
5.17.6 Place one foot firmly on the ground with the knee at a right angle and
the other foot slightly apart and further back.
5.17.7 Place your hands on the front of the armrests and moving your weight
forward, bring your head and shoulders up over your knees as you push
yourself up.
