De-Commissioning
239
Fuel System
The following de-commissioning procedure should be followed:
1.
Fill
the fuel tanks to minimize the air space for water condensation.
2.
Add
a fuel stabilizer, such as Stanadyne or Biocide by
following the instructions
on the product
.
3.
Have fuel filter elements ready to change
in the re-commissioning process.
Generators
The Northern Lights Generator is designed to drain all raw water into the muffler on
shutdown. Therefore, no
raw water
will be left in the cooling system between the raw
water pump and muffler.
The following de-commissioning procedure should be followed for each Generator:
1.
Change
the oil and oil filter element while the Generator is warm.
2.
Make sure the coolant system is filled with
50/50 mixture
of anti-freeze and
distilled water.
3.
Close
the raw water intake seacock.
4.
Disconnect
the hose connecting the sea strainer and the raw water intake seacock
at the seacock
and drain all the water from the hose into the bilge.
5.
Open
the valve at the bottom of the sea strainer and drain all the water into the
bilge.
6.
Disconnect
the hose connecting the raw water pump to the sea trainer
at the sea
strainer
and let the water drain into the bilge.
7.
Seal
the air intake with plastic and DUCT tape.
8.
Loosen
the cover plate on the raw water pump on the Generator to allow all water
to drain out of the pump.
9.
You may want to consider
removing
impeller (replace with new one during re-
commissioning).
10.
Open
the plug on the bottom of the muffler and allow water to drain.
11.
Loosen
the tension on the alternator.
12.
CLOSE
the fuel supply valve.
13.
Wipe down
the engine and spray it with WD-40.
14.
Have a
new fuel filter element
available to put on when re-commissioning to
catch any particles trapped by the fuel stabilizer.
LPG System
Leave tank valves
CLOSED
and turn
OFF
the circuit breaker labeled ‘
PROPANE
SOLENOID
’ on the 12V DC NAV./COM. Electronics Panel.
Propeller Shaft Seal
The Propeller Shaft Seal needs no special de-commissioning procedure. The small
amount of raw water that is left in the seal and tubing is not enough to cause a problem.
Also, when the propulsion engine is de-commissioned, some anti-freeze/distilled coolant
mix will stay in the seal and tubing.
