Yacht Exterior
Gel Coat
Routine Cleaning and Maintenance
It is good practice to spray down all exterior surfaces with fresh water when you get back
to the dock to remove salt residue.
The exterior gel coat can be washed with a cloth or soft brushes, taking care to use bio-
degradable soaps and cleansers. The gel coat can be waxed using a fine hard wax to help
protect it from the harmful effects of the sun and salt water.
Repairing Minor Damage
A quality wax product can help minimize hairline scratches in the gel coat. They can be
removed with rubbing compound and buffing.
Navigation Light Maintenance
At the base of each Navigation Light housing is a small hole that allows for the escape of
any condensation that may have accumulated within the housing. This hole is necessary
because of the temperature changes caused by the operation of the light, and should never
be plugged with grease, dirt, wax, polish, or other material. The housing should be
cleaned with soap and water, and, if necessary, a cleanser suitable for acrylic glass that
does not contain abrasives or solvents. Once a year, the bulb should be removed from the
socket. The bulb and socket contacts should be cleaned and a drop of contact oil applied
prior to inserting the bulb. The housing should never be painted.
Stainless Steel Railings
Stainless steel railings and hardware are under constant attack, especially in salt water. If
not properly cared for, over time, they will pit and corrode.
Frequently spray down stainless steel and aluminum surfaces with fresh water to remove
salt residues and to reduce the effects of galvanic corrosion. Protect these surfaces by
applying a marine wax or sealant routinely to all railings, cleats, chocks, and stainless or
aluminum hardware. Always remove rust spots as soon as possible with a brass, silver, or
chrome cleaner.
NEVER
use steel wool or sandpaper on stainless steel.
NEVER
use
bleach or mineral acids on stainless steel.
CAUTION
Stainless steel IS NOT rust proof. It will discolor, rust and even corrode when in
contact with salt water, sulfides, or rusting metals.
TIP
Any cleaner safe for glass is usually safe for stainless steel.
