DRIVE CHAIN
For safety and to prevent excessive wear, the drive chain should be
checked, adjusted and lubricated in accordance with the Periodic
Maintenance Schedule. Checking, adjustment, and lubrication must
be performed more frequently in extremed conditions such as dusty
or salty roads. The drive chain slack and lubrication must be checked
every day before riding the motorcycle and in accordance with the
periodic maintenance schedule.
WARNING: If the chain becomes worn or stretched — either too
loose or too tight — the chain could jump off the sprockets or
break. A chain that breaks or comes off the sprockets could catch
on the engine or lock the rear wheel. Either event may injure the
rider and lead to loss of control and cause an accident.
INSPECTION
1. Park the motorcycle resting on its side stand.
2. Inspect the chain for signs of wear or damage, paying special attention
to the rollers, connecting pins, and links.
3. Rotate the rear wheel to find where the chain is tightest.
4. Measure the maximum play by pushing up and down on the chain at
the midpoint of its length between front and rear sprockets.
5. If the maximum play is to great or too little (if the chain is too tight
or too loose), adjust it so that the chain play is within the recommended
value (see image).
