INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:

OPERATION, CARE, MAINTENANCE, & INSPECTION:
Periodical checks
should be made to the playground. Inadequate maintenance can result in children being injured. All
equipment should be stable in the ground. All parts should be securely fastened and no footings should be exposed. There
should be no worn-out parts or missing parts such as rungs or railings. Materials such as metal, plastic and wood need to care to
see that they are smooth and have not deteriorated. Surfaces need to be maintained to proper depths and be free from sharp
objects.
All rope gradually deteriorates when exposed to weather. Natural fiber ropes' worst enemy is mildew caused by moisture and
synthetic ropes' worst enemy is the sun. Other than avoiding these conditions, little maintenance can be performed.
Replacement nets and ropes are available. Weak or broken ropes should be immediately replaced.
STOP UNNECESSARY WEAR:
Outer and inner rope fibers contribute equally to the strength of your rope. If worn out the rope is naturally weakened. Eliminate
rubbing, dragging, or working over rough surfaces. Protect surface at contact points with chafing gear such as canvas, tape or
padding, wrapped around rope. Pad corners from sharp objects. Tape around splice areas to eliminate children from pulling
splice ends out. If this happens simply weave strands back into rope and then tape or cover splice area.
RESPONSIBLE AND SENSIBLE SUPERVISION:
•
Limit climbing heights to child's ability
•
Do not jump or drop off
•
Do not ride or leave bikes or other toys in climbing area
•
Hold on with two hands
•
A
void ponchos, scarves, hoods or other loose fitting clothing when climbing
•
Avoid rocking of equipment
SECURING SAFE EQUIPMENT & PLAY AREA CHECKLIST:
•
Supervision is present, but strings and rope are not.
o
Adult presence is needed to watch for potential hazards, observe, intercede and facilitate
play when necessary. Strings on clothing or ropes used for play can cause accidental
strangulation if caught on equipment.
•
All children play on age-appropriate equipment.
o
Preschoolers, ages 2-5, and children, ages 5-12, are developmentally different and need
different equipment located in separate areas to keep the playground safe and fun for all.
•
Falls to surface are cushioned.
o
Acceptable surfaces include mulch, pea gravel, sand and/or synthetic materials. Playground
surfaces should not be concrete, asphalt, grass, blacktop, packed dirt, or rocks.
•
Equipment is safe.
o
Check to make sure the equipment is anchored safely in the ground, all equipment pieces are
in good working order, S-hooks are entirely closed, bolts are not protruding, there are no
exposed footings, etc. Safety checklists are available from the CPSC or the National Program
for Playground Safety.
