Operation Manual – ITW GSE 6400 Tier 3 

 

Generator Check 

Trouble, Symptom, 
Condition 

Probable Cause 

Test, Check, and/or Remedy 

1. Generator 

does 

not build up 
voltage when the 
engine is at the 
rated speed. 

Problem with brushes

Remove, clean, and reinstall the generator brushes, 
replacing them if they are shorter than 7/16 of an inch 
(11mm).

 

Exciter fuse (F3 or F8) 
blown

 

Replace exciter fuse(s). 

Defective wiring 
between interface board 
and generator

 

Check all connectors and wires between the interface board 
and the generator. Pull gently on wires to insure they are 
properly inserted in the connector.

 

Defective diode on 
control winding.

 

The diode is located on the generator’s brush holder 
mounting bracket. Check it with an ohmmeter to see if it is 
good.

 

Defective voltage 
regulator on interface 
board

 

Replace interface board.

Defective generator 
control winding 

 

Measure resistance between two yellow wires coming from 
generator.  It should be around 13 ohms.  It is defective if 
shorted or open.

 

Defective generator 
armature G402

 

If no problem was found with the control winding, the 
generator stator is defective.  Send unit to overhaul.

 

Problem with brushes

Remove, clean, and reinstall the generator brushes,
