VFR

Visual Flight Rules

are a set of regulations under which a pilot

operates an aircraft in weather conditions generally clear
enough to allow a pilot to see where the aircraft is going and
remain clear of other airborne or surface traffic.

Weight and Balance Terminology

Center of Gravity (CG)

Center of Gravity

is the point about which an airplane or other

equipment, would balance if suspended from that point.

Empty Weight

Empty Weight

is the weight of the airplane, including all oper-

ational equipment that is installed in the airplane: weight of the
airframe, powerplant, required equipment, optional and
specific equipment, fixed ballast, full engine coolant and oil,
hydraulic fluid, and unusable fuel.

Fuselage Station (FS)

Fuselage Station

is a location along the airplane fuselage from

front to back given in inches and measured from Reference
Datum.

Gross Weight

Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW)

Maximum Weight

The maximum weight approved for the start of the takeoff run.

Reference Datum

Reference Datum

is an imaginary vertical plane from which all

horizontal distances are measured for balance purposes.

Useful Load

Useful Load

is the difference between gross weight (MTOW)

and empty weight.

Other Terminology

is the ballistic, whole-aircraft para-

chute recovery system for the A5.
