Support Features
Multi boot
One of the new features of the VL7 is the capability to separate the notion of
physical and logical disks and the possibility to define a boot order
independently from the physical connection of the disks to the IDE cable.
In the Boot/Hard Disk Drives section of the Setup program, you can specify
from which IDE hard disk drive or bootable SCSI adapter the system will
boot from, regardless of its position on the IDE cable. Note that the general
boot order is defined in Boot/Boot Device priority section of the Setup
program.
For example, if the physical position of a disk is changed (a disk is moved
from the Master IDE connector to the Slave IDE connector) the BIOS will
detect this physical change. However, you can continue to boot from this
disk if it was configured as the first boot device in the Setup program,
although it is on a different physical connector.
Overview
The boot order is not dependent upon which IDE connector the hard disk
drive is using. Changing the position of the hard disk drive on the IDE cable
does not change the boot order, except when you completely remove the
disk that was originally assigned as the boot disk.
The table below shows some example configurations. These examples
indicate how the boot device is determined by the Boot/Hard Disk Menu and
not by the physical connection of the hard disk.
