11 Configure the MSA1510i
The following methods are available to initially configure the MSA1510i:
●
Storage Management Utility, Initial System Configuration Wizard
●
Storage Management Utility, user interface
●
MSA1510i Command Line Interface
Storage Management Utility, Initial System Configuration Wizard
The wizard is the easiest and simplest method of configuring your system. You
are prompted in a logical sequence for storage, iSCSI, logon, and management
settings. Then, the wizard uses those settings to configure the storage and make it
available on the network. Depending on the characteristics and number of
physical hard drives in the storage enclosures, and the selected RAID level, one
or more large logical drives are created and mapped to one target. After
completing the wizard, the main user interface of the Storage Management
Utility (SMU) is displayed, for you to enter security settings and manage the
storage. The wizard is the best configuration method for single-server
environments needing bulk storage.
Storage Management Utility, main user interface
The Storage Management Utility main user interface (SMU) can be used to
initially configure the system, as well as manage the storage. The SMU offers
more flexibility when configuring the physical hard drives into logical droves
units. The SMU is the best configuration method for multi-server environments that
need to customize the storage configuration and control access to the storage.
Command Line Interface
The MSA1510i Command Line Interface (CLI) offers a command level method of
configuring and managing the storage, and is provided for system administrators
who prefer this method of system management.

1. Access the HP Storage Management Utility:
- From a workstation on the MSA1510i LAN segment, open a Web browser.
- Enter the IP address of the MSA1510i controller management port,
displayed on the controller LCD panel.

.
5. In the Storage Configuration window, enter the settings to use.
The wizard provides suggestions, unique to each MSA1510i installation,
based on the detected number of storage enclosures, enclosure type (SATA or
SCSI), number of drives, drive type, speed, size, and other criteria.
6. In the iSCSI Configuration window, enter the values for your iSCSI network,
along with initiator and target information.
7. In the Logon Settings window, specify if you want to change the username
and password for future access to the Storage Management Utility.
8. In the Management Settings window, enter settings for the SMU.
NOTE:
The wizard defaults to the IP address assigned during the startup routine. Change
this to the static address you want to use for management traffic.
9. After completing all steps of the wizard, a confirmation window is
displayed:
- Click
Finish
to apply the settings.
- Click
Cancel
to change the settings.
While the utility applies the settings, a progress bar is displayed.
When configuration is complete, a completion message is displayed.
10. Modify the IP Address of the management device to be in the same
subnet as the static address assigned to the MSA1510i management port.
11. Access the SMU and navigate through the tabs of the interface, to
familiarize yourself with the interface, your initial configuration, and the
available options.
For information about using the SMU, see the
HP Storage Management
Utility user guide
, available on the MSA1510i documentation CD and the
MSA1510i web site.
12. Configure the iSCSI initiator:
- Define the target portal.
- Logon to the available targets.

8 Connect the cables
●
Connect redundant power supplies of a device to separate power
sources. If you have only one UPS, maintain separate power paths by
plugging one power supply to the UPS on one power source and the
other power supply to a separate power source.
●
Use qualified Category 5e (or better) Ethernet cables.
●
Ensure that the cabling does not interfere with system operation or
maintenance. Bind the cables loosely with cable ties and route the excess
cables out of the way, along the side of the rack.
●
Attach a label near both ends of each cable to identify the device
connected to that cable.
●
Color-code both ends of each cable, to help visually identify a particular
cable without having to read or locate the label.
On the server:
●
Connect the NICs to the network switch.
On the MSA1510i:
●
Connect to the network switch (
1
).
●
Connect to the storage enclosures (
2
).
●
Connect to two separate power sources (
3
).
●
In redundant configurations, connect to the redundant switch (
4
).

1. Verify that the following devices are powered on and in a ready state:
●
Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS)
●
Storage enclosures
●
Ethernet network switches
2. Start up the MSA1510i by pressing the Power/Standby button on the front of
the device.
3. Wait for the MSA1510i startup routine to complete.

NOTE:
If the server is powered on before the MSA1510i startup routine is completed, the
server may not properly discover the storage.
6. Power on (or restart) each server with access to the MSA1510i, and log on as
a user with administrative control.
7. Verify that each device in the network is operating properly:
●
Read switch and server event logs.
●
Read messages on the MSA1510i display panel.
●
View status lights (LEDs) on each device.
●
Verify that the MSA1510i controller Heartbeat LED (
1
) is blinking.
●
Verify that the MSA1510i controller Link State LED (
2
) is on.

NOTE:
Each MSA1510i is shipped with firmware preinstalled on the controller.
However, in between manufacturing cycles, updated firmware may be placed on the
MSA1510i web site:
http://h18006.www.1.hp.com/products/storageworks/msa1510i.
HP recommends checking the Web, and if a newer version of firmware is available,
download and install this latest firmware release.
