Interpreting the
Network Status
Lights
The rear panel has two network status lights for the RJ-45
connector. The yellow link light will illuminate when the
network driver is properly configured and the system is
physically connected to an active network.
The green activity light illuminates when the computer detects
network activity. When the system is connected to a highly used
network, the green activity light will remain on almost
constantly.
If Remote Wakeup is enabled, the link and activity lights will
remain functional even when power to the computer is turned
off, as long as the computer’s power cord is still connected to a
power outlet.
Disabling the
Autosensing
Capabilities
Your computer automatically senses whether the attached
network supports 10 Mbs or 100 Mbs and configures itself
accordingly. This process of determining the maximum network
operating speed is known as autosensing. The computer begins
autosensing whenever it loses a valid network link, for example,
if the cable is disconnected.
In addition to determining the network operating speed, the
computer determines if full-duplex is supported. Full-duplex
systems can transmit and receive information on the network
simultaneously. Half-duplex systems cannot transmit and
receive simultaneously. The different modes of operation are:
■
100Base-TX, full-duplex
■
100Base-TX, half-duplex
■
10Base-T, full-duplex
■
10Base-T, half-duplex
If necessary, you can disable the autosensing capabilities and
force the system into a different operating mode. To set the
network operating mode manually:
1. Click on the Network icon, located in the Control Panel.
2. Click on the Integrated Compaq 10/100 TX NIC Intel
WOL UTP PCI Controller.
3. Select the Advanced Properties tab.
