SERVICE INFORMATION

HRX217HYA • HRX217HZA

DRIVE CLUTCH CABLE ADJUSTMENT AND GROUND SPEED MEASUREMENT

PROCEDURE

Before checking the ground speed, the engine speed and drive clutch cable must be properly adjusted.

ADJUSTMENT

a. Move the throttle to the FAST position.
b. With engine off, loosen the locking clamp screw holding

the cable.

c. At the control plate, pull the cable backward slowly

moving levers A and B.

d. When lever A stops moving, hold the cable in that

position. DO NOT PULL FURTHER.

e. Lever B can still move if you continue pulling hard

enough.

f. Tighten the locking clamp screw.

If the locking clamp does not completely cover the
throttle cable, then readjust the cable using the lock
nuts at the upper handlebar adjuster and repeat steps
C thru E before tightening the clamp screw.

g. Start the engine and let it warm up,

h. Engage the Roto-Stop

, and then check the engine

speed with the throttle set to the FAST position.

i. If the engine speed is not within specification, bend the governor spring arm very slightly as needed:

• Left increases spring tension and engine speed.

• Right decreases spring tension and engine speed

j. Check the drive clutch cable adjustment.

DRIVE CLUTCH CABLE ADJUSTMENT

a. With the engine stopped, position the cable ties as shown

P. 2-26

b. Pull the shift lever all the way back to the neutral position.

c. Start the engine and move the throttle lever to the FAST

position.

d. Engage the drive clutch lever and confirm the

following:
• The lawn mower should not self-propel with the shift lever

all the way back.

• The lawn mower should begin to self-propel (creep)

when the shift lever is moved one click forward.

e. Readjust the cable if necessary to achieve the above

condition.
