1. Overview
The Common Information Model (CIM) and Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) allows one
to access information about the VSP G1000 storage system. To collect such information, you can use
the standard CIM operations released by the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF). CIM
conforms to the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) from the Storage Network
Industry Association (SNIA).
This chapter gives an overview of the CIM/WBEM features provided by the Embedded SMI-S Provider
for the VSP G1000.

VSP G1000 and CIM/WBEM
VSP G1000 supports WBEM defined by the standards-setting organization DMTF. WBEM is a standard
proposed by the DMTF for managing networked devices, including hosts and storage subsystems,
over the Internet. WBEM enables you to share data about devices in different environments (such as
environments with different vendors, operating systems, or protocols) without considering the
differences. WBEM is based on CIM, an object-oriented information model. CIM, defined by DMTF, is
a standardized approach for managing systems in network environments. CIM provides a framework
for expressing the data to be managed. Applying CIM to storage subsystems enables you to use
standardized methods to manage the configuration and status of storage subsystems in networks.
The CIM models provided by VSP G1000 conform to the SMI-S specifications published by SNIA. The
CIM models of the VSP G1000 server are defined in Managed Object Format (MOF) files provided by
the Embedded SMI-S Provider. The MOF namespace provided by the Embedded SMI-S Provider is

CIM clients can access VSP G1000 by using the CIM XML/HTTP interface defined by the DMTF.
