PA Replacement

Since field repair of the Power Amplifiers is not a recommended procedure, the only
option is to replace it. A replacement PA will include the 1/4 inch thick copper plate
under the PC board. Do not remove the PC Board from the copper plate.

•

To remove the amplifier from the heatsink, first remove the cover. Then only remove

the larger hex-head screws.

•

When installing the new PA be sure to apply a thin but even coating of thermal com-

pound before re-assembly to the heatsink. Tolerance on the screw holes will assure
alignment into the Z-Plane connector.

Isolation Board Maintenance

WARNING:

DISCONNECT AND LOCKOUT PRIMARY POWER AT THE AC SOURCE PRIOR TO
PERFORMING ANY CONNECTIONS, REPAIRS, OR MAINTENANCE INSIDE THE
TRASNMITTER.

If it is determined that one of the Isolation Boards needs repair or replacement, then the
following procedure should be read and thoroughly understood before beginning. The
entire Isolation assembly is relatively inexpensive and easy to remove and replace. The
Isolation resistors and RF switches are critical to the proper operation of the combiner
system. Replacement of any parts on the Isolation Boards requires the proper soldering
equipment and techniques to prevent damage to components or the PC board itself. The
isolation resistors all have thermistors attached to them with epoxy for temperature
sensing. Therefore the resistors and thermistors must be obtained from Harris, pre-
assembled. De-soldering on the Isolation Board requires a lot of heat due to the large
amount of ground plane. If the resistors are not heated and removed properly, the PC
board will be damaged and the feed-throughs pulled out.

5.6.1

Isolation Board Replacement

There are 4 Isolation Boards in the Z16HD+, one for each Z-Plane. The boards are
mounted on each side of the power blocks.
