4.3.6
Transmitter Control and Monitoring
The Main Controller uses a Controller Area Network or CAN bus for PA Cabinet
control and monitoring. The CAN bus is a bi-directional serial network line that is daisy
chained to all PA Cabinets and PA Modules. In case of a Main Controller Failure, the
Life Support board provides hardwired ON/OFF control lines to each PA Cabinet.
4.3.7
External Interlocks
There are five PA cabinet and a door external interlock circuit in the control cabinet.
These circuits, when closed, allow normal transmitter operation. When the external
interlocks are open, the transmitter, or part of the transmitter is inhibited, upon closure
the transmitter will re-establish operation with out further operator action.
The Exciter Interlock, when opened, sends a signal to the on-air exciter and activates
the RF Mute circuit in the exciter.
The External interlock, when opened will inhibit the PA cabinet or the modules within
the cabinet (jumper selectable on the Cabinet Controller). When the entire cabinet is
inhibited, the power supplies, modules and air handling are inhibited.
4.4
Single PA Cabinet
The main difference in the various transmitter models is the number of RF Power
Amplifiers used. Each PA Cabinet contains an RF module Splitter, PA Modules,
Module Power Supplies, Module Combiner, Module circulators, circulator reject
attenuators, RF Power Detectors, cooling system fan and a Cabinet Controller.
4.4.1
Module Splitter
The Module splitter splits the single RF input signal from the Control Cabinet into
equal amplitude, equal phase signals applied to the input of each PA module.
4.4.2
Module Combiner
The Module combiner sums the output of the modules and directs that power out the
cabinet output transmission line. Circulators are used at each input to the module
combiner to absorb any reflected power caused by a combiner input mis-match. This
energy is dissipated in the circulator reject loads and reported back to the Cabinet
Controller through the RF detectors.
