c.

Push the pad down onto the glass plate. Push down from the center out to the edge to
prevent air pockets between the pad and the plate.

Note: The pad is less likely to lift from the glass plate when put on the day before use.

6.

To use an alumina polish pad again, rinse the pad with deionized water.

Note: Rinse the pad with deionized water to wet the polishing alumina on the pad. Dry clumps of polishing
alumina will cause deep scratches in the working electrode.

7.

Shake the bottle of 0.05-μm polishing alumina.

8.

Add 5 drops of the alumina polish to the pad. Separate the drops evenly on the pad.

9.

Put the glass plate on a hard, flat surface.

10.

Put the working electrode on the pad with the front surface down.

11.

Move the working electrode over the pad with constant pressure in a figure-eight pattern for 1 to
2 minutes.

12.

Rinse the working electrode with deionized water from a squeeze bottle.

13.

(Optional) Use a low-powered (150-watts or less) ultrasonic cleaner to remove abrasive particles
from the working electrode as follows:

a.

Put the working electrode in a beaker.

b.

Add deionized water to the beaker until the working electrode is covered.

c.

Put the beaker on the ultrasonic cleaner for a maximum of 5 minutes.

d.

Remove the working electrode from the beaker.

e.

Rinse the working electrode with deionized water from a squeeze bottle.

14.

Rinse the working electrode with methanol (or ethanol). Dry the working electrode with a lint-free
cloth.

15.

Let the working electrode fully dry at room temperature before use. Do not use heat or direct
sunlight to dry the working electrode.

Replace the potentiostat battery

Explosion hazard. Incorrect battery installation can cause the release of explosive gases. Be sure that
the battery is of the approved chemical type and is inserted in the correct orientation.

W A R N I N G

Explosion hazard. An expired battery can cause hydrogen gas buildup inside the instrument. Replace
the battery before it expires. Do not store the instrument for long periods with a battery installed.

N O T I C E

Do not use the potentiostat if the internal battery is not installed or damage to the potentiostat will occur.

Replace the battery each year.

Items to collect:

• Velcro with adhesive, ¾ in.
• 9 V rechargeable NiCad battery (ER-9701)

4

1.

Set the CELL MODE knob to STBY.

2.

Set the POWER switch of the potentiostat to OFF.

3.

Disconnected the power supply from the potentiostat.

4.

Remove the four screws from the back of the potentiostat.

4

Use of other battery types (e.g., alkaline or Ph acid) can be dangerous and will void the
warranty.
