Understanding Gullwing Function
On planters with Wing Flex Option, the wing must be
raised every time the planter is raised to keep the
openers from dragging the ground. This function is
referred to as gullwinging the planter. Gullwinging is
designed to happen automatically when the planter is
raised. The operation of this function varies depending
on the options purchased with or installed on your
planter.
Gullwinging Of Planters With Lift Assist
On models with lift assist, the wing flex cylinders receive
their oil from the lift assist hydraulic circuit. This process
causes the planter to gullwing when it is raised. The
gullwing function occurs automatically when the lift assist
is operated. The gullwing function is triggered by a
gullwing switch located on the lift assist arms. The
timing of the gullwing function can be changed by
rotating a cam that operates the gullwing switch. See
Switch Adjustments, With Lift Assist
the lift assist cylinders raise the rear of the planter, the
plunger in the gullwing switch de-energizes a solenoid
valve and cause the wings to raise to the gullwing
position. As the lift assist cylinders lower the rear of the
planter, the gullwing switch energizes a solenoid valve
and allow the wings to lower to the planting position.
Gullwinging of Planters Without Lift Assist
Automatic
On planter without lift assist, the wing flex cylinders must
receive their oil from the fold hydraulic circuit to gullwing
the planter when it is raised. In order for the gullwing
function to occur automatically in this configuration, the
fold hydraulic circuit must be locked in for continuous
operation in the UNFOLD direction. The automatic timing
of the gullwing function is controlled by a gullwing
switch located on the (center section) planter gauge
wheel adjustment screw. See “
” on page 60. As the planter is raised
by the tractor, the gullwing switch de-energizes a
solenoid valve and cause the wings to raise to the
gullwing position when the (center section) planter gauge
wheels leave the ground. As the planter is lowered, the
gullwing switch energizes a solenoid valve and allows
the wings to lower to the planting position. Timing of the
gullwing function is set by forcing the plunger in the
gullwing switch to move in about 1/8 inch when the
gauge wheel is raised off the ground.
