POWER STEERING COMPONENTS - TRW ROSS 3B3-9
• The rack piston poppet adjuster seat and
sleeve assemblies must not be allowed to bot
tom against the internal poppet stops in the
steering gear until it is installed in the vehicle.
21. Valve housing bolts (1).
Tighten
• Bolts alternately to 149 N-m (110 ft. lbs.) (dry).
• Bolts alternately to 109 N-m (80 ft. lbs.) (lubri
cated).
22. O-ring (45) and relief valve (44) (if removed).
• Assemble the small end of the tapered spring
on the pin on the other part of the relief valve
and insert the assembly (tapered spring end
first) into the relief valve cap (54) cavity.
•Turn relief valve cap as assembled into valve
housing.
Tighten
• Relief valve cap (54) to 41 N-m (30 ft. lbs.).
23. Sector shaft in a soft jaw vise by gripping the ser
rated end (if adjusting screw was removed).
• Coat the expanded end of the new adjusting
screw with a suitable grade of wheel bearing
grease and insert into the recess in the end of
the sector shaft.
• Thread a new sector shaft screw retainer (48)
into the sector shaft and adjust to permit free
rotating of the sector shaft adjusting screw by
hand without perceptible end play 0 to 0.05 mm
( 0.002 inch) loose.
• Stake the new retainer into the two slots provid
ed using a suitable punch. Use care when stak
ing the retainer. A retainer that is broken or
cracked during the staking must be replaced.
• Check freedom of adjusting screw movement
and end play.
24. Light coating of oil to the bushing in the side cover.
25. Seal (39) on J 37071 so the side with the spring is
toward the tool.
26. J 37071 into the side cover bushing.
• Press the seal into the side cover housing with
a force of 46 to 362 kg (100 to 800 lbs.) until it
is seated against the bottom of the counterbore.
27. Sector shaft into the side cover.
• Lightly oil the short bearing area of the sector
shaft.
• Screw in the sector shaft adjusting screw coun
ter clockwise until the screw reaches solid
height.
• Rotate the adjusting screw 1/2 turn clockwise
so that the side cover will rotate freely on the
sector shaft.
28. Jam nut (51) a few threads.
29. Vent plug (53) until the plug is flush.
30. Side cover gasket (49) to the side cover using
clean grease to hold it in place.
31. Sector shaft and side cover assembly into the gear
housing.
• There are four teeth on the rack piston. Rotate
the input shaft to position the rack piston so the
tooth space between the second and third tooth
is in the center of the sector shaft opening.
Important
• If the rack piston is not centered when sec
tor shaft is installed, gear travel will be
severely limited in one direction.
• Clean off any old tape on the sector shaft serra
tions. Retape the serrations and bolt groove
with one layer of masking tape. If the sector
shaft serrations are not properly taped, the ser
rations will damage the output seal.
• Make sure that the center tooth of the sector
shaft engages the center space of the rack pis
ton.
32. Special side cover bolts (52) (figure 12)
Tighten
• Bolts (52) in the sequence shown to 312 N-m
(230 ft. lbs.) (dry fasteners).
•Bolts (52) in the sequence shown to 231 N-m
(170 ft. lbs.) (lubricated fasteners).
