Ground Start Ground

For OB (FXS) voice circuits that use ground start signaling, an explicit ground connection must
be made between the Metroplex 6000 and the switching equipment (PBX). Ground start FXS
works by connecting the Ring lead of the telephone circuit to earth ground causing current to flow
in the Ring lead but not in the Tip lead. On the Metroplex 6000, OB voice channels configured
for ground start FXS connect the positive pole of the battery to the rear panel terminal block
position labeled GS GND. This position must be connected to the switching equipment (PBX)
common ground. By default, it is shorted to chassis ground.

Power Supply Redundancy

The Metroplex 6000 Wallmount Enclosure contains an internal AC input power supply which
provides a regulated 24 VDC supply to the cards in the enclosure. To provide for power supply
redundancy, an optional external source of 24 VDC may be connected to terminal block TB2
labeled EXT. POWER. The recommended power source is International Power Sources, Inc.
Model No. PUP110-14.

Connect the black (negative) wire to the terminal labeled -BATT and the red (positive) wire to
the terminal lBATT.

If the Metroplex 6000 internal power supply fails, this external power supply may be used to
provide power without interruption. A power supply alarm message is displayed on the local
manager VT-100 screen as

INT. P.S. FAIL

Similarly, if the external supply fails or is disconnected, an alarm message

EXT. P.S. FAIL

appears, and the internal supply continues to supply power. Both power supplies feed the cards
through two diodes located on the unit backplane.

Power Line

The line cord is terminated in a IEC 320 plug. Connect this plug to the IEC receptacle located on
the rear of the unit.

Connect the line cord to a grounded AC power outlet. The outlet should not be under switch
control.

If you are unsure of the ac receptacle ground return, a separate ground wire can be run to a suitable
grounding point. Figure 1-3 shows the ac grounding standoff located at the rear of the enclosure.
The wire used for this ground must be a minimum of 16 AWG and long enough to connect from
the chassis grounding post labeled GND to the ground point without any splicing.

Do not secure the power cord to any building surface.
