REDUNDANT ETHERNET CONFIGURATION

The Redundant Ethernet Board (REB) incorporates an integrated Ethernet switch. Because of this, it has two Media
Access Control (MAC) addresses; one for the IED in which it is fitted (the NIC MAC address, or IED MAC address), and
one for the embedded Ethernet switch (the switch MAC address). Each MAC address is associated with an Internet
Protocol (IP) address which needs setting. To configure the REB you will need to set the IP addresses associated
with the embedded Ethernet switch on the REB and the IED to which it is fitted.

An IP address is a logical address assigned to a device that uses the Internet Protocol (IP) for communication with
other devices. IP addresses are represented using Decimal Dot Notation where four sets of decimal numbers are
separated by dots as follows:

An IP address in a network is usually associated with access to a limited part of the internet known as a subnet
and defined by a subnet mask. The subnet mask defines which network the device belongs to. A subnet mask has
the same form as an IP address and, like an IP address, is usually assigned by the system designer.

The IED and the embedded REB switch each have their own IP addresses. The following diagram shows how the IP
addresses relate to each other and outlines the mechanisms for setting them. In the figure the IED is described by
the address IP1 and the embedded REB switch is described by the address IP2.
